On being little
I know that BJJ is all about leverage, about the smaller guy being able to beat the bigger guy.. but we all know that strength plays a big factor in BJJ. When the guys use their strength against me, I feel completely and utterly useless. Like a rag doll being tossed around. I weigh a little over 95 lbs and the other guys average about 140 lbs, except for 2. Yes, not all moves are strength based, I have to agree with that. But escapes, especially the escapes from sidemount, I find very difficult to do. Even more so with the guy being a lot heavier than me. I guess I'll have to figure it out eventually.. till then, I'm going to have to get used to being squashed!

Heh - I like the sound of 140lbs average. Would be a nice change if my 143lbs was normal rather than squish-fodder, as it tends to be here in the UK.
ReplyDeleteIts tough always being the smaller person. Generally my advice would be to look upon it as an opportunity to get really good at escapes, focusing in on each of the components to an escape (hand position, hip movement, bridging etc), improving incrementally until it comes together.
On side control specifically, you could try keeping in mind that to escape, you need to move yourself rather than move them. I.e., moving off their body, rather than trying to shove their body off you, if that makes sense.
Further thoughts here.
Great advice! I've been working on my escapes and defenses as of late :) Really helpful for someone my size!
