position vs submission

As of late, I've been attacking more than I should. Instead of holding the position before going to my submission, I attack right away and end up vulnerable to passes, eventually turning into a better position over me. Lesson learned. Securing a position sure beats .. being beat! 
One of the reasons for attacking so much is my lack of cardio. I feel like I should finish the fight as soon as I can, before gassing out. Obviously, this is wrong. What I should be doing is working on my cardio and learning how to secure positions.
